Onion ‘Red Torpedo Tropea’

Description

This wonderful old Italian specialty onion is originally from Tropea, the Calabrian town in Italy known for its superb cuisine. Italian torpedo onions can be used in any stage. When pulled as baby onions, just as the stems start to swell, their beautiful, bright magenta color, mild flavor, and crunchy texture work well in salads. When they bulb up, they have an elongated torpedo shape and develop a deep pungent flavor. This variety does well in Intermediate and Long Day areas. Grows to 6″ and stores up to 3 months.

Care: Plant in 4″ wide bands, in rows 12″ apart with full sun and well-drained soil.

Fall Harvest variety

Late-season vegetables adapted to tolerate both the heat of late summer and the cool nights of fall. Harvest in late summer or fall. See our Fall & Winter Vegetable Guide for specific planting/harvest times & freeze-out temperatures.
