Famous for their rich, nutmeg flavor, they were once the most widely grown muskmelon in Canada, New England, and the Midwest and sold at a premium in big city restaurants. In the 1940’s, it declined due to its lack of ship-ability and the urban expansion of Montreal. It has netted skin and green flesh that isn’t musky like some cantaloupe, but light and richly fruity. For peak flavor, harvest the fruit when still firm and mostly green.
