Lavender ‘Grosso’ (Lavandula x intermedia)

Description

Deep violet flowers are very fragrant. Choice variety from France has a beautiful, fanlike blooming habit. Aromatic, gray-green foliage looks great all winter. Use the buds to garnish a martini or in a simple syrup for flavoring gin-, vodka-, or sparkling wine-based cocktails. Grows 18-24″ tall. Full sun. Perennial.

Mixologists’ Simple Syrups:

To make a simple syrup, heat equal parts sugar and water until the sugar melts. Allow to cool, then steep Grosso in the mixture for 30-60 minutes. Strain and store in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 weeks.

Lavender bitters: 8 ounces of 100-proof vodka, 1 cup dried lavender blossoms, ginger slice, 5 cloves, 2 tablespoons dried orange peel. Steep for two weeks in a dark cool place. Strain. Add one teaspoon simple syrup, store in a dark bottle.
