Grows well in all Zones but is particularly well-adapted to northern interior climates with cold winters. It produces bulbs with good size and character and a beautiful silver color, with individual cloves having a reddish pink color. When eaten raw, the cloves’ heat starts slowly and builds to very hot. Softneck garlic contains more cloves in each bulb than hardneck garlic, and their papery skins are wrapped tighter, keeping them fresher and giving them a longer shelf life. Softnecks mature later and store longer than hardneck types, and the bulbs become spicier the longer they’re stored.
Care: Plant 6-8″ apart, 1-2″ deep. Harvest when all but 3-4 leaves turn dry and brown (usually July). Hang to dry in cool, shady, ventilated area for 2 weeks, then store in a cool dark location.
