Delphinium oreganum (Willamette Valley larkspur)

Description

Why choose native plants? Pacific Northwest native plants know how to live here and how to thrive here. They often need much less water and less fertilizer. They spread slowly and are not invasive. They support a wide diversity of wildlife. And best of all, they look great!

A stunning, rare Willamette Valley native perennial growing from tubers. Each tuber sends up a single stem with toothed leaves growing up each side, primarily on the lower half of the plant. Single stem produces several flowers growing up the top of the stem in deep purple, blue, and indigo from May – June. This is a generally carefree plant, requiring little special treatment. Simply plant this species in partial to full sun with moist, well-draining gravelly soils, then sit back, and watch it thrive. May require infrequent summer water when planted in the sunniest of locations (i.e. a deep watering every few weeks). Supports pollinators, hummingbirds, and butterflies.  Grows 1 – 2 feet tall with a 2 – 3 foot spread. Partial shade in well-drained soil.
