Wisteria frutescens ‘Amethyst Falls’

Description

Nothing smells like the dawn of summer more than the sweet scent of wisteria. Considered by some to be a dwarf wisteria, Amethyst Falls has smaller leaves than its Asian relatives and bears pendant clusters of fragrant, light purple flowers. Once this plant is established, it can climb 18 to 20 feet high and has a spread of 10 to 15 feet wide, so incorporating a structure, like a pergola or trellis, will help keep its growth maintained; simply prune it back every winter to help train it onto the structure. Its ability to attract hummingbirds and butterflies makes it a great addition to a pollinator garden. Prefers moist, well-drained soil in full sun. Hardy to Zone 5. Image courtesy of Meridian Young.
