OP. In search of the ultimate pie pumpkin, we grew extensive ‘pie-class’ trials and held a blind taste-off of all our pie pumpkin variety entrants. Winter Luxury comfortably commandeered first place from our panel of judges for outstanding flavor and texture. With thick flesh that’s dense and sweet, there’s plenty for a couple of pies. The 5–7 pound beauties are flawlessly formed, rounded fruit with orange skin that’s netted in a fine veil like the ghost of a cantaloupe rind. In the field, the unusual skin texture gives this squash a rich, velvety appearance befitting of its name. 105 days.

Care: Plant 5-6′ apart in rows 6-8′ apart in full sun. Space more widely and remove all but one fruit from each vine for the largest pumpkins. Leave on the vine as long as possible, until rinds have hardened. Bring in after the first light frost, before rains.
