Treasure Island Sweet Potatoes are a breakthrough in breeding as they are the first edible and ornamental sweet potatoes on the market. Not only are the leaves colorful, they are edible as well! In the fall you can dig up and enjoy the colorful sweet potatoes. The varieties in the Treasure Island series are named after Polynesian islands. Each plant hides a ‘treasure’ underneath the soil, and the varieties sport different leaf and root colors.
Treasure Island Kaukura is named after Kaukura Island. The Kaukura sweet potato is rich in beta carotene, and it’s delicious. Its edible, heart-shaped, deep-purple leaves, light-orange skin and vibrant orange flesh are bursting with flavor, making it ideal in a smoothie or as a juice, for cooking, or grated like carrot in a salad. However prepared, the Kaukura sweet potato delights taste buds.
Grow sweet potatoes in rich fertile, light sandy well drained soil. They prefer an acid or neutral soil in full sun. Harvest sweet potatoes in late summer approximately 10 to 14 weeks after planting, when the foliage begins to turn yellow and die back.
