Dryopteris wallichiana ‘Jurassic Gold’ (Alpine wood fern)

Description

This lovely wood fern has a surprise for you: new fronds emerge in brilliant golden-orange, providing a very nice contrast to the standard green foliage common amongst most ferns, and in the more mature foliage of Jurassic Gold itself. When seen in the woodland garden, it’s like watching fireflies come out in the evening: first one bright light appears, then another, and soon the whole hillside is alive with flashes of color. When planted with other, more traditional ferns, the contrast is even more apparent. Don’t have a woodland garden or a large shady hillside? No problem; this fern does very well as the centerpiece of a patio container. Jurassic Gold grows 18 – 24 inches and is Hardy to Zone 5. Like most ferns, Jurassic Gold thrives in shade in moist, well-drained soil.
