An heirloom, open-pollinated gourd variety that produces small, pear-shaped gourds. These gourds have a bicolor appearance with a yellow top, green bottom and white stripes along the enlarged base of the gourd. On occasion, some fruits will be all green or all yellow due to natural variations within the variety. Pear Bicolor Gourd plants should be given plenty of room as vines can grow as long as 20′ in some cases. Fruits are the shape of a small pear, averaging 2-3″. Photo courtesy of Hoss Tools.
Care: Plant 4-6′ apart in rows 6-8′ apart in full sun and well-drained soil. Grow on a trellis or fence for cleaner fruit. Leave on the vine as long as possible, until rinds have hardened. Bring in after the first light frost, before rains. Wash ripe gourd in diluted bleach solution, dry, then wax with floor wax and polish. Turn regularly while drying; takes about a month.
