Currant Alpine Currant (Ribes alpinum)

Description

Extremely winter hardy, Alpine Currant is a dense, rounded deciduous shrub in the gooseberry family. Emerging early, the foliage changes to dark green in summer with an attractive gloss on the leaves’ upper sides, before turning yellow in the fall. The flowers are greenish-yellow but ornamentally insignificant. This plant is dioecious (separate male and female plants). Scarlet juicy berries appear in midsummer on female plants and attract birds and butterflies to the garden. Grow this plant in full sun to deep shade in average moist well-drained alkaline soils. Grows 3-6 feet tall. Hardy to Zone 2.  Photo courtesy of Wikipedia.
