Small, round green berries turn red and finally mature to a dark purplish black in early summer. Fruit is sweet and edible. Leaves turn a brilliant red-orange in the fall. Will tolerate full sun but prefers part to light shade. This is a small, deciduous, usually multi-trunked understory tree or tall shrub which typically matures to 15-25′ tall with a similar spread. Attractive understory tree\/shrub for lawns, shrub borders, woodland margins or native plant areas. Shrub forms can be grown as tall informal hedges or screens. Good plant for bird gardens.
