The common name &#8220;Welsh onion&#8221; does not refer to Wales but derives from a near obsolete use of Welsh in the sense &#8220;foreign, non-native,&#8221; as the species is actually native to China.<\/p>\n<p>Welsh onions are very similar in taste and odor to the related common onion, <i>Allium cepa<\/i>. The Welsh onion, however, does not develop bulbs, and possesses hollow leaves (<i>fistulosum<\/i> means &#8220;hollow&#8221;) and scapes. Larger varieties, such as the Japanese <i>negi<\/i>, resemble leeks, whilst smaller varieties resemble chives. <i>Allium fistulosum<\/i> can multiply by forming perennial evergreen clumps.<\/p>\n<p>The Japanese name is\u00a0<i>negi<\/i> (\u8471), which can also refer to other plants of the genus or, more specifically, <i>naganegi<\/i> (\u9577\u8471), meaning &#8220;long onion.&#8221; It is used in miso soup,\u00a0<i>negimaki<\/i>\u00a0(beef and scallion rolls), among other dishes, and it is widely sliced up and used as a garnish.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/loghouseplants.com\/plants\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Welsh-Onion-FC.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-29337\" src=\"https:\/\/loghouseplants.com\/plants\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Welsh-Onion-FC-1024x488.jpg\" alt=\"Welsh Onion-FC\" width=\"1024\" height=\"488\" srcset=\"https:\/\/loghouseplants.com\/plants\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Welsh-Onion-FC-1024x488.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/loghouseplants.com\/plants\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Welsh-Onion-FC-300x143.jpg 300w, https:\/\/loghouseplants.com\/plants\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Welsh-Onion-FC-768x366.jpg 768w, https:\/\/loghouseplants.com\/plants\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Welsh-Onion-FC-1536x731.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/loghouseplants.com\/plants\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Welsh-Onion-FC-700x333.jpg 700w, https:\/\/loghouseplants.com\/plants\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Welsh-Onion-FC.jpg 1575w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Allium fistulosum, the Welsh onion, also commonly called bunching onion, long green onion, Japanese bunching onion, and spring onion, is a species of perennial plant often considered to be a kind of scallion.
