The word m\u00e1te means &#8216;gourd&#8217; in Spanish and is the traditional vessel in which Yerba M\u00e1te is served in South America.<\/p>\n<p><i>Ilex paraguariensis<\/i>\u00a0begins as a\u00a0shrub\u00a0and then matures to a tree and can grow up to 49\u00a0ft tall. The leaves are\u00a0evergreen, 0.3\u20134.3\u00a0in long and 1.2\u20132.2\u00a0in wide, with a serrated margin. The leaves are often called\u00a0<i lang=\"es\" title=\"Spanish language text\">yerba<\/i>\u00a0(Spanish) or\u00a0<i lang=\"pt\" title=\"Portuguese language text\">erva<\/i>\u00a0(Portuguese), both of which mean &#8220;herb&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0flowers\u00a0are small, greenish-white, with four petals.
