Its habit is tall and spreading, growing up to 5 feet tall and wide.\u00a0Leaves are enormous, up to 16 inches long and 12 inches wide. \u00a0Each leaf is made up of 3 leaflets, with the terminal leaflet generally larger than the basal 2. \u00a0Leaf margins are serrated and lobed.\u00a0Stems are slightly ridged and hirsute (very hairy). \u00a0This is in stark contrast to the smooth and glaucous stems of poison hemlock.\u00a0Large swollen regions of the stem are conspicuous, and are really just flower buds waiting to emerge. \u00a0These swellings can be as large as an orange.\u00a0Flowers occur in a flattened compound umbel, typical of plants in the carrot family.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/loghouseplants.com\/plants\/library\/welcoming-butterflies-to-our-gardens\/\">Butterfly Bed &amp; Breakfast Project<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cow parsnip is a biennial that spreads by seed.
