Fresh Food With A Local Twist
And who can blame me if I sneak in some stunning rattail radishes? These intriguing creatures are grown not for their smallish roots but for their elongated, curvaceous seedpods in glossy purple or deep green. (The actual name is Raphanus caudatus, also called Rat’s Tail Radish or Dragon’s Tail). As an often lazy gardener who likes to let root crops bloom for the bees, I discovered the spicy flavor and crunchy spunk of radish seed pods years ago. Snowy Day Treats (Gluten Free Or Not)
Not too sweet, moist and sturdy, this cake is a family favorite for tea time or a special breakfast. If you prefer, you can use walnuts or hazelnuts instead of the almonds, or even hulled pumpkin seeds. Though simple and quick to make, it dresses up nicely for birthdays, topped with swirls of whipped cream and fresh berries. I usually fill it with homemade raspberry jam but blueberry or red currant jams are also very good.

Changing The Cycle (And A Snack)
So where am I going? I’m guessing that the coming year(s) will hold many, many opportunities for ego collapse at depth as perceived goals are betrayed and unforeseen means are used to reach unforeseen ends. That time of brokenness is a time of opportunity for true, deep, and abiding change to occur. As Gandhi wrote: “If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. This is the divine mystery supreme. A wonderful thing it is and the source of our happiness. We need not wait to see what others do.”
